Over the years many recording techniques have been developed on the basis that they work and offer a good starting point when considering mic placement and what you expect to achieve when using them.
Of course experimentation and your own thoughts are perfectly valid but its always good to know what other have found useful.
A great example of an unconventional micing technique was used on the recording of Michael Jackson’s song Bille Jean. For the ‘Dont think twice’ repeat part, the engineer had Michael sing this through a 5 foot cardboard tube. No mixing effect required!
Don’t try this at home! Here is an Shure SM57 wrapped in a plastic bag under water placed near a kick drum for a ‘Washy’ (no pun intended) sound.
Another bit of experimental micing on a kick drum here featuring a tunnel!
